Paul and his father Sid Fleischman are both Newberry Medal Winning Authors (Sid for The Whipping Boy in 1987, and Paul for Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices in 1989)
What inspired Fleischman to write Seedfolks?
Although he says that the idea came from an article in a tabloid about ancient Egyptian doctors prescribing garden walks for the mentally ill. He admits that being raised by two avid gardeners may have played a role in igniting his passion to write the story.
Robby- Poem A Garden of People: Diversity Breeds Community
People of different races All with different faces
One at a time, cleaning One at a time, planting
People with different background All digging in a place they found
Making it their own, sharing Everyone caring
About their garden Their Community Their Plot Their City
People of different races, All with different faces
Coming together In any weather Planting seeds in a garden, Picking up one another When they have fallen.
One garden One Community Growing
2.) Alexandra Fisher:Original Song written for Seedfolks Lit Circle, titled "Seed Folk Song". When writing lyrics, my theme was based on the character Sam. I really liked his positive view and his belief that the smallest gestures can make a difference. I recorded this on March 6th with my friend, Laura Burke, who is an Arts Technology student here at ISU. I layered 3-4 guitar melodies/tracks that I created, and 2 vocals tracks (one main vocal track, and one "oos and aahs" track during the chorus section). Disclaimer- when uploading, Soundcloud somehow cut off the song a few seconds short- but that's okay! Enjoy!

Alexandra Fisher:Cross-Curricular (Science+L.A.) Seed/Classroom Garden Activity
I typed out all of the Character's garden influences on photoshop... then I purchased plant holders and seeds to pass out for the class so that they can make their very own "little paradise" in our own city...
